Brunello

Brunello is made from a clone of Sangiovese, the Sangiovese Grosso grape, which is also called Brunello in the local dialect. Brunello di Montalcino comes from the town of Montalcino in Tuscany. DOCG regulations stipulate that the wine be made 100% from Sangiovese. DOCG is "Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita" ("Controlled designation of origin guaranteed")This requires that the wine be produced within the specified region using defined methods and that it satisfy a defined quality standard. Think of it as quality control for wine. DOCG labelled wines are analysed and tasted by government licensed personnel before being bottled. This prevents the winemaker from adding to or manipulating the wine after the fact. The wine is then sealed with a numbered governmental seal across the cap or cork.
